Project Overview

In 2025, the Headwaters Rocky River Subwatershed (HRRSW) planning project was
completed with grant funding from the EPA 205j program with matching funds from the
NC Land and Water Fund. The entire planning area of the HRRSW is a 14.8-square mile
subwatershed of the Rocky River within the Upper Cape Fear River Basin and is located
in the Piedmont Ecoregion in central North Carolina. Encased within this subwatershed,
the mainstem of the Rocky River from its source to its confluence with the North Prong
Rocky River drains northeastern Randolph and northwestern Chatham counties. The
headwater reaches of the mainstem Rocky River flow into biologically impaired portions of the Rocky River as well as critical habitat of the federally-listed endangered species Cape Fear shiner (Notropis mekistocholas).
