Food Safety Essentials & Regulatory Compliance For Food Enterprises Webinar

Join Sara Runkel, Local Food Program Director, with Carolina Farm Stewardship Association (CFSA) and Kate Nicholas from North Carolina State University (NCSU) Extension for an informative webinar on essential food safety practices and regulatory requirements for NC food enterprises. This workshop, geared towards emerging food hubs, distributors, mobile markets, and farmers markets, will cover practical solutions to improve food safety when selling a variety of foods. You will leave with a better understanding of what regulations apply to your business and licenses you may need. You will also hear from a food enterprise manager about their experience navigating regulations and food safety requirements. This workshop is part of PTRC's Food Finance Technical Assistance Hub funded by the Healthy Food Financing Initiative (HFFI).

This interactive in-person seminar is designed for elected and appointed officials (including managers and department heads) from local governments who are setting strategic direction around affordable housing. Projects must be located in one of the 12 counties of the Piedmont Triad Regions (Alamance, Caswell, Davie, Davidson, Forsyth, Guilford, Montgomery, Randolph, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry and Yadkin).
The Piedmont Triad Regional Council is now accepting applications for the 2025 Growing Food Finance Grants, a funding opportunity to support local food retailers and food enterprises in expanding access to healthy foods in underserved areas across the Piedmont Triad Region. With a total of $125,000 available in 2025, grant awards will typically range from $20,000 to $45,000, with larger awards considered for projects demonstrating significant regional impact or need. Funding is made available through the Healthy Food Financing Initiative (HFFI) Partnerships Program led by Reinvestment Fund and is part of PTRC's broader Growing Food Finance in the Triad project.
Eligible applicants include: Food retailers and enterprises, nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses, local governments and food councils, tribal governments, institutions of higher education

Pedestrian Safety -- Call for Projects
The NCDOT is excited to announce an open Call for Projects focused on pedestrian safety. The Call for Projects is open October 6, 2025 and runs through November 14th, 2025.
This call for projects is specifically focused on improvements in smaller urban and rural areas that can be obligated quickly and require little to no right-of-way acquisition in communities with high need for improved pedestrian safety. Eligible pedestrian safety projects include a range of pedestrian-focused improvements, such as:

Marked crosswalks, curb ramps, visibility enhancements or traffic control at crossings

Marked crosswalks, curb ramps and pedestrian WALK phasing at signalized intersections

Improved crossings at unsignalized or midblock locations
Important aspects of this effort:

Cost estimates are not needed at the time of project submission. NCDOT will develop estimates for selected projects.

Local matching funds are not needed for selected projects.

NCDOT will administer and deliver selected projects.

Construction funds for selected projects will need to be obligated by June 30, 2026

Small Business Impact Program
The Duke Energy Foundation is offering a Small Business Impact Program in North Carolina. Eligible nonprofits may apply for this $25,000 grant opportunity by October 31st at 5pm. Selected small businesses (up to 50 employees) may receive Impact Awards of up to $5,000 (note: payroll, rent, and utilities are not eligible).
Deadline: October 31 at 5:00 p.m., and awards will be announced: November 30

FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program provides funding to state, local, tribal and territorial governments so they can develop hazard mitigation plans and rebuild in a way that reduces, or mitigates, future disaster losses in their communities. This grant funding is available after a presidentially declared disaster.
In this program, homeowners and businesses cannot apply for a grant. However, a local community may apply for funding on their behalf.
All state, local, tribal and territorial governments must develop and adopt hazard mitigation plans to receive funding for hazard mitigation project application.

EDA Announces Disaster Recovery Funding
Opportunities for 2023-24 Events
The U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) recently issued the FY25 Disaster Supplemental Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for “regions experiencing severe economic distress or other economic harm resulting from hurricanes, wildfires, tornadoes, floods, and other natural disasters” occurring in calendar years 2023 and 2024. The EDA has recorded informational webinars as well as printed materials (FAQs, etc.), which can be found here. ➡️
EDA’s Disaster NOFO provides funding through three funding pathways:
Readiness Path – Capacity building and strategic planning projects that set the stage for future investment. (Applications accepted on a rolling basis)
Implementation Path – Standalone construction and non-construction projects that help communities recover from natural disasters and advance recovery and growth. (Applications accepted on a rolling basis)
Industry Transformation Path – Coalition-led, multi-project portfolios that transform regional economies through targeted industry development. (Deadline is March 3, 2026 at 5:00 PM ET.)

Disaster Recovery Financial Administration Training - The Piedmont Triad Regional Council (PTRC), in partnership with the North Carolina Association of Regional Councils of Government (NCARCOG), is excited to announce a six-hour eLearning course designed to equip local communities with the knowledge and tools to prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies and disasters.
