Blue Cross NC Foundation Invests in the PTRC’s Food System and Medicaid Transformation Initiatives

Two grants totaling over $772,000 from the Blue Cross NC Foundation will allow the PTRC to fund programs that focus on improving health equity. These grants will enable the PTRC to serve as a hub for two efforts: 1) a regional food system network and 2) education and training about NC Medicaid Transformation.

Blue Cross NC Foundation has granted $634,500 for the Piedmont Triad Regional Council to implement a four-year plan that promotes a more inclusive, healthier and resilient food economy. “The Foundation is investing in the Piedmont Triad Regional Food System Initiative in large part because of their long and successful history of engaging local governments, non-profits and businesses across the Piedmont Triad region to find creative regional solutions to identified challenges and opportunities and the variety of benefits -- from community health to economic development.” said Merry Davis, Senior Program Officer, Blue Cross NC Foundation. This funding will enable the PTRC to continue bringing together leaders from urban and rural counties to analyze and create solutions that build opportunities for growth in the food system.

The PTRC hosted the first Regional Food Council Meeting on April 29, in which 10 of the 12 counties in the region were represented. Early activities include a comprehensive study that will provide data to local leaders about opportunities for growth and development of food systems in the region. Blue Cross NC Foundation also joined the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust in co-funding the PTRC’s statewide public educational efforts surrounding the NC Medicaid Transformation. The $138,000 Blue Cross NC Foundation grant adds to $302,500 from the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust announced on April 22. “This is an exciting and critical time for our state as we prepare for Medicaid Transformation,” continued Blue Cross NC Foundation’s Davis.  “PTRC will play an essential role in this process and we value their leadership and commitment to developing regional capacity and infrastructure to support partnerships between social service, public health, and health care to address the social factors that impact health.”

NC Medicaid Transformation creates new opportunities for connection between health care and human and social services that impact health and for Medicaid to pay for these services. These will include services such as housing, transportation, food, and interpersonal violence assistance. With two of the state’s leading grantmakers supporting the PTRC’s education efforts, they will take the lead in educating the Piedmont area about the transformation of health care happening in North Carolina.
