What is the Weatherization Program?

The Weatherization Assistance Program helps low income, elderly, or disabled residents in seven counties in the Piedmont Triad (Alamance, Caswell, Davidson, Forsyth, Guilford, Person, Randolph, and Rockingham) save energy and reduce their utility bills by improving energy efficiency.

The program makes sure that Piedmont Triad residents have reliable, efficient, and safe ways to stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer.  In addition, the US Department of Energy has documented that homes receiving weatherization assistance saved an average of $215 per year on energy bills.  That is savings that can be counted on year after year.

Weatherization assistance is available for most types of housing -- single family homes, duplexes, condominiums and mobile homes. You do not have to own your own home to be eligible. Renters must have written permission from their landlord.

Documents Needed to Apply

  1.  Copy of photo ID or Drivers license - Address must   match requested service location
  2.  12 month utility history - Electric and gas
  3.  12 month income information - For all households members
  4.  Property Tax Record Card for the home, recorded at   the county court house where the home is located.

*PTRC will help you locate and provide these and other documents during the application process.

The Piedmont Triad Community Development department offers other housing services aside from this free weatherization program. Please see the link below to our other programs.

Piedmont Triad Regional Council Receives National Association of Development Organizations 2017 Innovation Award for the Collaboration for Greener Homes

WASHINGTON, DC – Piedmont Triad Regional Council based in Kernersville, North Carolina has received a 2017 Innovation Award from the National Association of Development Organizations (NADO) for the Collaboration for Greener Homes.

The Piedmont Triad Regional Council (PTRC) Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) partnered with the Duke Helping Homes Fund to provide the elderly, disabled, and households with children with Energy Efficient Appliances. The replaced appliances included refrigerators, washers, dryers, and air conditioners. The appliances that the families received allow them to decrease their energy consumption as well as decrease global warming emissions. PTRC WAP was able to serve 400 households in seven counties. The total numbers of appliances provided are: 243 refrigerators, 68 air conditioners, 98 washers, and 70 dryers. The families served are on a fixed income and were unable to replace/repair their appliances. Some of the appliances were over twenty years old and a hazard to their homes as well as the environment.

NADO is a Washington, DC-based membership association of regional development organizations that promotes programs and policies that strengthen local governments, communities, and economies through regional cooperation, program delivery, and comprehensive strategies.  The association’s Innovation Awards program recognizes regional development organizations and their partners for improving the economic and community competitiveness of our nation’s regions and local communities.  2017 marked NADO’s 50-year anniversary of supporting regional economic development across the country.

Award-winning projects were honored during NADO’s 2017 Annual Training Conference, held September 9-12 in Anchorage, AK.   The 2017 class of award recipients consists of 80 projects spanning 21 states.  These projects are presented in an interactive “Story Map” developed by NADO and Esri and include project summaries, funding information, and partners.  The Story Map is available online at:  https://www.nado.org/innovation-awards/.

“The Innovation Awards program is an opportunity to recognize the important work of regional development organizations that are promoting economic development and improving quality of life for local residents,” said 2016-2017 NADO President Lynne Keller Forbes, Executive Director of the South Eastern Council of Governments, located in Sioux Falls, SD.  “These projects demonstrate the diversity of work that regional development organizations undertake to benefit the communities and regions that they serve.”
