Uwharrie Regional Greenway Grant

Post Date:01/08/2026

The Regional Planning Department has been awarded $825,000 in federal funding to advance planning and engineering for a future greenway connection between downtown Troy in Montgomery County and the trail system within the nearby Uwharrie National Forest.

The funding was awarded through the Federal Lands Access Program (FLAP), a federal initiative designed to improve transportation facilities that provide access to, are adjacent to, or are located within federal lands. FLAP supports state and local resources for public roads, transit systems, and other transportation facilities, with an emphasis on high-use recreation sites and economic generators.

The project will begin with a feasibility study scheduled for 2026, followed by preliminary engineering in 2027. Once completed, the greenway is expected to strengthen recreational access, enhance connectivity between downtown Troy and the Uwharrie National Forest, and support outdoor tourism.

This investment represents a significant step forward for economic development, recreation, and quality of life in Troy, Montgomery County, and the surrounding region.
