What is the Weatherization Program?

The Weatherization Assistance Program helps low income, elderly, or disabled residents in seven counties in the Piedmont Triad (Alamance, Caswell, Davidson, Forsyth, Guilford, Person, Randolph, and Rockingham) save energy and reduce their utility bills by improving energy efficiency.

The program makes sure that Piedmont Triad residents have reliable, efficient, and safe ways to stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer.  In addition, the US Department of Energy has documented that homes receiving weatherization assistance saved an average of $215 per year on energy bills.  That is savings that can be counted on year after year.

Weatherization assistance is available for most types of housing -- single family homes, duplexes, condominiums and mobile homes. You do not have to own your own home to be eligible. Renters must have written permission from their landlord.

Documents Needed to Apply

  1.  Copy of photo ID or Drivers license - Address must   match requested service location
  2.  12 month utility history - Electric and gas
  3.  12 month income information - For all households members
  4.  Property Tax Record Card for the home, recorded at   the county court house where the home is located.

*PTRC will help you locate and provide these and other documents during the application process.

The Piedmont Triad Community Development department offers other housing services aside from this free weatherization program. Please see the link below to our other programs.

Weatherization Training

Post Date:01/30/2025 9:15 AM

The Weatherization Training Center operated by the Piedmont Triad Regional Council is now an accredited training provider by the Interstate Renewable Energy Council, or IREC. A first-time applicant, PTRC was granted accreditation in December 2024.

PTRC’s Weatherization Training Center, begun in 2020, trains building and construction professionals in weatherization and energy efficiency home improvements, particularly those carried out by PTRC’s own Weatherization Assistance program. Certification is necessary to perform this work, including the inspection and auditing of a home to prescribe energy- efficient renovations. IREC-accredited courses are particularly desirable among homebuilding professionals, and course hours earned in them also count toward individual accreditation as an IREC-certified instructor.

“As a first time applicant, PTRC went through a rigorous assessment of their own policies and procedures to meet the IREC Standard,” IREC said in announcing the accreditation on Dec. 17. “They showed a commitment to quality training, safety, and continuous improvement.”

PTRC’s 2025 slate of weatherization training classes begins Feb. 27 at PTRC’s Kernersville offices. Six more classes will be offered through April. To view the course calendar and register for a class, please visit the Weatherization Training Center’s home page.

“We’re grateful to IREC for the honor and recognition, but the accreditation will go a lot further than that in helping this area,” said Drew Corbett, PTRC’s community development and weatherization supervisor. “Homes receiving weatherization assistance need professionals to do the work; those professionals need training and certification to get that work. PTRC can serve both needs even better thanks to IREC’s accreditation.”

PTRC’s weatherization training center supports the council’s overall mission of providing weatherization assistance to qualified homes in the 12-county area PTRC serves in North Carolina. The council is currently administering a $15 million fund, provided by the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, that will ultimately provide weatherization assistance to 1,300 homes by 2027. More than 150 of those homes are due to receive weatherization assistance this year.

“Weatherization assistance and the training center are a long-running success story that everyone at PTRC is proud of,” said Matthew Dolge, PTRC’s executive director. “IREC’s accreditation is more than a recognition for our staff and their work; it helps us sustain and improve a very important outreach that serves multiple constituencies.”
